Sports Physical Therapy is the speciality area of the physical therapy profession that deals with the prevention, emergency care, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of sports related injuries. The staff of PTS has been caring for athletes of Northeast Tennessee since 1977.

Founder and President Dr. Danny D. Smith is board certified in both orthopedic and sports physical therapy, being one of the first physical therapists in the US to attain both certifications. Dr. Justin Smith was initially trained as a trauma RN before being admitted the the Belmont University School of Physical Therapy. After graduation, Dr. Justin Smith joined his father at PTS as the clinical director of the Elizabethton office and Vice-President of the practice. In 2010, Dr. Justin attained the title of Clinical Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy indication his board certification, the youngest in the state of Tennessee and one of only 500 in the United States.

Our sports Physical Therapy practice includes sideline and courtside coverage of athletic events, the provision of emergency care on the field or court, and followup rehabilitation services as needed with the goal of returning the athlete to play as quickly and as safely as possible. Other aspects of the Sports program include educational programs conducted on a national level for other physical therapy professionals, physicians, nurses, athletic trainers and coaches as well as local inservice education programs for area personnel.

PTS has one of the first credentialled Sports Physical Therapy Residency programs in the nation and the only one in the states of Tennessee. A Doctoral level physical therapist licensed to practice in Tennesse applies to our residency program and is admitted following an evaluation process by our admissions committee. The Residency program is 13 months in length with major emphasis on all aspects of Sports Physical Therapy care of athletes from sideline to rehabiliation and return to play as well as prevention of injuries and performance enhancement.

PTS conducts a free sports injuries clinic on Saturday mornings during football season from 8:00am until 11:00am that is open to all area athletes regardless of their level of competetion. PTS will assist you with referral to a physician of choice if indicated. There is no physician referral required prior to being evaluated or treated at PTS.
